oh, Girl

so the jezebel.com commentators are all worked up about white girl privilege and sex & the city-lite but my heart says whatever, they've missed the point - Chris Eigeman is back in my life! (plus, it's a show by/about ladies that has the potential to be actually good) New trailer for Lena Dunham's TV show:

Are you a Jackie or a Marilyn?

More words for russh, excuses to look at pictures of beautiful women. Mad Men costume exhibition comes to Australia (in years to come, Christina Hendricks' measurements will be as hotly contested as those of Ms Monroe)

I love to see the towns go crawling by

I heard this at a party on the weekend for the first time in a really long time and now I've had it on repeat for days. Goddamn it, Cat Power. Her covers are untouchable.

earthquake weather

Ed Ruscha's Every Building On The Sunset Strip

"But the feeling feeling in L.A. that the place was not safe - that hovering earthquake in the air - was why anyone in the trance even came down long enough to learn to thread a camera at all. They had to take their eye off what was probably the apocalypse and invent Theda Bara out of a girl from Cincinatti to make sense out of the light."

Debut Album

For the Melbournites here's an art opening worth getting out of bed for: the gorgeous Greedy Hen duo are puttin' on a show. Debut Album launches May 5 at Lamington Drive Gallery before hitting the road to Sydney and NYC. Go early so you can get a spot down the front. waking up in the water

So Big Wave was basically my summer anthem, and the Jenny & Johnny show on Monday was full of girl plus boy harmonies and general dreaminess - turns out not only are they an indie power couple of the first order but super sweet too. One of the guys from Phantom Planet (back in the day when Jason Schwartzman was their drummer...swoon) introduced my BFF and me to the music of Rilo Kiley  and I've been girl-crushing on Jenny Lewis ever since. It's really great to find out that she is as nice as I always hoped she'd be, and that she loves Gram Parsons as much as I do. What else does Jenny recommend? Listening to Gram and Emmylou for learning how to sing harmonies, bordeaux for good wine drinking, Sydney over Melbourne.

Bernice bobs her hair

A trio of fabulous femmes to give you an idea of what my summer hair looks like. Tragically, a Myrna Loy 'do doesn't automatically come accessorised with a William Powell-type partner in crime to be the Nick To my Nora.

I'm everything you ever wanted to be!

Ladies and gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains!
Corinne "Third Degree" Burns is kind of my new hero. She's tough as fuck and epically disdainful. And she doesn't get her comeuppance for being a rebel girl, which happens in so many other movies. Sure, her erstwhile love interest (who knew Ray Winstone made such a babin' rockabilly-punk?) destroys her audience by telling them they're adverts, but at least he doesn't slut-shame her or tell them that maybe she does put out - when she wants to.

"I'm perfect. But nobody in this shithole gets me because I don't put out!"

and life is like a song

Sometimes all a girl wants to do is lie in bed and watch technicolour musicals. I would pretty much wear everything in this film, no kidding. And the picnic scene is hard to beat - all I want for summer is a boy who rolls his cuffs up.
